QR codes in brochures and catalogsA code for every page. Current details behind each one.

Give each section or product its own code: the spec sheet, a demo video, the product page or this quarter’s price list. What’s printed on the page stays as printed; with dynamic codes you change what each code opens, so the scan shows current details after prices and ranges move on.

One brochure, many codes

Map each page to the code that belongs on it

One code on the cover is enough for “see the full range online”. A code per section or product opens the right page directly, and shows you which parts of the catalog get scanned.

A vCard code is made for one person, so a catalog with three reps on the contact panel needs three. If one product needs several destinations, a List of links QR code puts them behind a single code.

Prices change. The ink doesn’t.

A figure printed on the page stays as printed. What you can change is where each code leads: a dynamic code prints a short QR Rapid link, so you can replace a PDF price list each quarter, or let a URL code open the product page as it is today. If a price will move, print “Scan for current prices” beside the code instead of a figure.

A static code is fixed to what you typed when you made it and isn’t tracked, so a printed catalog can’t be corrected later. The PDF QR code page explains the cover page and file replacement.

  1. Q1Catalog printedThe back-page code opens price-list-q1.pdf; each product code opens its own page.
  2. Q2Prices riseReplace the PDF with price-list-q2.pdf. Scanning any copy already handed out opens the new list; prices printed on the pages stay as printed.
  3. Q3A chair is discontinuedPoint that product’s URL code at the replacement model’s page.
  4. Q4Still on the counterThe printed pages and prices are unchanged; the codes open current details. Reprint when you choose to.

A dynamic code works while it’s active in your QR Rapid account; if it’s deactivated (for example when a plan ends), scans show an inactive-code page until you reactivate it.

What to link from a page

The print shows the product. The code shows the rest.

  • A spec sheet

Dimensions, materials, care and finishes, as the document you already produce. Up to 20 MB per file.

    PDF QR code

  • A product page

The page on your own site, showing whatever it shows today: price, options, how to order.

    URL QR code

  • A demo

Assembly, a walk-around or the product in use, where a photo on paper can’t show it.

    Video QR code

  • Several resources

Spec sheet, video and order page behind one code, as a mobile page of buttons.

    List of links QR code

  • A photo set

More project photos than the page has room for. Suits a printed portfolio.

    Image QR code

Printed portfolios

Put an Image code beside each project for the full photo set, a PDF code on the back for the complete portfolio, and a List of links code for your site, a showreel and a booking link.

Sales handouts and leave-behinds

One code for the demo, one for the rep’s contact card. For proposals, rate cards and reception signs, see QR codes for business services.

Dozens of codes

Name them after the page they’re printed on

A forty-page catalog can carry dozens of codes. Keep them findable by naming and filing them the way the catalog is laid out. Your plan sets how many dynamic codes you can create.

  1. 1

Create one. Make the first dynamic code for one product, with your colours, logo and frame.

  2. 2

Duplicate it. One copy per product or section, then change each copy’s destination.

  3. 3

Rename by page. Start each name with the page number and product, so the list reads like the catalog.

  4. 4

One folder. Move the catalog’s codes into one folder, and start a new folder for next season’s edition.

  5. 5

Filter Statistics. By folder for the whole catalog, or by one code to see whether a section gets scanned.

Statistics shows scans by hour, day or week, devices and operating systems, countries and cities, and estimated unique visitors, which counts distinct IP addresses and is an estimate, not a count of people. Duplicating, editing and scan counts are for dynamic codes only.

Where it goes on a spread

Four rules for a code on a catalog page

AC
B
CoverD
A diagram of an open catalog spread: a code beside a product (A), a hatched no-go zone along the gutter (B), a margin along the trimmed edge (C), and a code on the cover (D).
A

Beside the product it belongs to

Next to the photo, name or price, with a few words saying what it opens. A code alone at the bottom of a page of six products is a guess.

B

Out of the gutter and folds

The inner margin curves into the binding, and a stapled or perfect-bound catalog won’t open flat. On a folded brochure, keep codes off the fold lines.

C

Clear of the trim

Outer edges get trimmed and held by thumbs. Leave a margin between each code and the page edge.

D

Cover or back page

One code for “the full range online” or the current price list, for people who won’t open every page.

Before the catalog goes to press

  • Gloss and silk stock reflect light at some angles. Keep spot varnish and foil off the code, and scan a proof under ordinary room light.
  • A catalog is read in the hand, closer than a poster, so codes can be smaller than on a wall. Don’t shrink one to fit a tight column.
  • Dark code on a light ground. Don’t set a code over product photography or a mid-tone tint.
  • Leave clear space around each code, and enough room between neighbours that a phone frames only one.
  • Label every code: “Spec sheet”, “Watch it assembled”, “Current prices”.
  • Scan every code on a printed proof, on the real paper, and check each opens the right product.

Send your designer the SVG, a vector file that drops straight into the layout. QR codes for designers covers styling the code for artwork files.

Brochure and catalog QR code questions

Should a brochure have one QR code or one per page?

One code on the cover works for “see the full range online”. In a catalog, a code per section or product opens the right page directly and shows you in Statistics which sections get scanned.

Can I update prices after the catalog is printed?

Not the prices printed on the page; those stay as printed. With dynamic codes you can update what each code opens: replace the PDF price list in your dashboard, or point a URL code at a page showing today’s prices. If prices will change, print “Scan for current prices” beside the code instead of a figure.

Should a catalog code open a PDF or a web page?

A PDF suits a spec sheet, price list or portfolio you already produce as a document, up to 20 MB per file. A URL suits a product page that already exists on your site, and Video suits a demo.

How do I manage dozens of codes for one catalog?

Create the first code, duplicate it for each product or section, rename each to match the page it’s printed on, and keep the catalog’s codes in one folder. Statistics can be filtered by folder or by a single code. Your plan sets how many dynamic codes you can create.

Will QR codes scan on glossy brochure paper?

Usually, but gloss reflects light at some angles. Keep strong contrast, leave clear space around each code, keep codes out of the fold and scan a printed proof under ordinary room light before the full run.

Which type suits a printed portfolio?

Image for a photo gallery, PDF for a portfolio document and List of links when the code should offer several pages, such as your site, a showreel and a booking link.

What a QR Rapid catalog code isn’t

  • It isn’t a catalog builder or a print service: you lay out and print the brochure; QR Rapid makes the codes.
  • It doesn’t sync with your shop or price list. Each code opens the file or page you set, so prices change only where you change them.
  • Statistics counts scans and reports estimated unique visitors. It doesn’t say who scanned or what they ordered.
